Office of Sustainability

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote environmental conservation, the health, wellness and prosperity of our citizens, and embed sustainability into the culture of the Louisville community.

Performance Improvement Summary

The Office of Sustainability has a mission of promoting environmental conservation, the health, wellness and prosperity of our citizens, and embedding sustainability into the culture of the Louisville community through broad-based education and awareness efforts as well as implementation of projects and initiatives to influence behavior change.

Among its many initiatives, the Office of Sustainability is working toward a long-term decrease in energy consumption.  The Office has set aggressive goals, the achievement of which will require the efforts of Metro Government as well as the many partnerships and concerted efforts of 760,000 citizens, all of whom have a role in helping Louisville become a truly sustainable city.  While not meeting initial benchmarks, progress has been made in defining the issues, identifying data sources and strategic partners, and researching best practices.  The Office will continue to set goals and design plans to reach them.  Key analysis efforts include the Sustainability Plan, the Tree Canopy Assessment, and the Urban Heat Island assessment.
